Hiring a hotel marketing agency: what to expect, what it costs, and when it pays off
Most independent hotels do not have a marketing problem. They have a distribution problem: the rooms sell, but through online travel agencies that keep 15 to 25 percent of every booking. A hotel marketing agency earns its fee when it moves a measurable share of those bookings to your own website and keeps the guest relationship with you afterwards. Everything else is decoration.
What a hotel marketing agency actually does
The useful work falls into four buckets. First, the website: fast on mobile, booking engine above the fold, real photography, a clear reason to book direct. Second, search: ranking for your city and property type so travellers find you before they find Booking.com. Third, social: an Instagram feed that shows the place as it is and grows an audience of people who could actually stay. Fourth, the loop: email and retargeting that bring past guests back without paying commission twice.
A good agency does these as one plan, not four invoices. If you are being sold Instagram without anyone looking at your booking flow, the order is wrong.
What it should cost
Pricing varies, but the structure should not. A website rebuild for a single property is a fixed-price project, typically delivered in two to four weeks. Ongoing work, such as social growth, content and campaigns, is a monthly retainer with a defined scope and monthly reporting. Avoid hourly billing with no cap, and avoid any agency that cannot show you a property they took from zero.
As a rule of thumb, if your OTA commission in a year is five figures, a direct-booking project pays for itself inside a season. If it is not, start with the website and social only.
When you need one, and when you don't
You need outside help when direct bookings are under 30 percent of revenue, when the website has not changed in three years, or when nobody on the team has time to post more than once a week. You do not need an agency if a single experienced marketer on staff can run the plan; in that case, hire for the gaps, usually design and development.
Questions to ask before signing
Who owns the website, the domain and the accounts afterwards? What happens if we stop? What does month one look like, day by day? Which property did you take from nothing, and can I call them? If the answers are vague, the work will be too.
How NOVARA runs it
We build the site in two to three weeks at a fixed written price, grow the channels with real people rather than bots, and report every month. You own everything. If you want a straight answer on whether your property needs any of this, book a 20-minute call and bring your OTA statement.
